Torrington native Shuttler completes 100th marathon

Torrington Register Citizen - SEYMOUR - The quickest runners of the Cape Cod Marathon in Falmouth, Massachusetts were lucky enough to avoid the downpour and 40 mile per hour wind blowing from the ocean. Any who finished comfortably within the race's 6-hour time estimate would know nothing of the challenges the slowest of the runners faced. Waves crashed over the walls, spilling ocean water onto the road. Fingers turned red as runners clutched their windbreakers to their backs, soaked through to the skin. And those who made it past the time estimate found the finish line removed, the booths packed up and saw only the medical staff there to greet them. Medals were handed to family and friends of the racers yet to finish, as the organizers of the race couldn't stand the rain any longer. The lack of the crowds of cheering onlookers didn't deter one Torrington native as he crossed the empty road. Because for Walter Shuttler, who now lives in Seymour, the real prize was finishing his 100th marathon at the age of 68.
