Midland Daily News - An autopsy administered by the Michigan State Police was unable to find any medical reason leading to a Homer Township crash that took the life of a 71-year-old Midland woman in November. Mary Miller was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Nov. 7 near the intersection of East Chippewa and South Sandow roads, after her 2011 Chevrolet Equinox crossed the centerline and drove off the roadway. The vehicle continued traveling east through a ditch before crossing South Sandow Road, crashing into a tree. MSP Lt. David Kaiser said the official cause of Miller's death was ruled to be blunt force trauma to the chest. Miller had her seatbelt fastened during the time of the crash, and was the only occupant in the vehicle. "If you have that kind of speed and then a sudden impact, the vehicle stops and your body stops, but sometimes the organs on the inside are still traveling at whatever speed the car was traveling," Kaiser said. Due to the unknown nature of the crash, the incident was inve

AP - PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Portland woman who says youth detention center workers knocked out her son's teeth has settled a lawsuit against the Maine Department of Corrections and Correct Care Solutions. The Portland Press Herald reports that Sadiya Ali's son will receive $250,000 from the state if a federal judge signs off on the proposed settlement. Correct Care Solutions' share is redacted in court documents; the company contracts to provide medical and dental care at Long Creek. The lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine on behalf of Ali and her son contends workers at the Long Creek Youth Development Center knocked out two of the 11-year-old's teeth when they smashed him against a bedframe in 2017. Most of the money will be placed in a special needs trust for the boy. About $50,000 of the settlement will go toward fees and dental bills. Settlement negotiations started on Oct. 28. The settlement proposal was filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Por

Yes, arbitration is a free-market solution to surprise billing

Washington Examiner - Even for the Rube Goldberg machine that is the U.S. healthcare system, few policy predicaments are as vexing as surprise medical bills. After leaving the emergency room, nearly 1 in 7 patients across the United States receive a bill from their provider in the mail days or even weeks after they have been discharged. These recovering patients went to an in-network facility confident that their insurer would pay their expenses, only to find out that their attending physicians were out-of-network (an unfortunate side effect of Obamacare narrowing insurance networks).
