Silver board may allow medical cannabis at schools
Silver City Daily Press - The Silver Consolidated Schools Board of Education discussed allowing students with a written treatment plan for medical cannabis to use the drug at school under supervision, just as with other prescription medications, at their regular board meeting Monday. The move was made possible by state Senate Bill 406, which was passed by the Legislature earlier this year and signed April 4 by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. The law allows the storage and administration of medical cannabis to certified students on school grounds. "I've worked over the past months with other school administrators in the Southwest, and I have been in contact with the Silver Schools legal representatives regarding this bill," said Dr. Leslie Shurts, director of nursing. The New Mexico Public Education Department has reviewed the bill and has proposed guidelines for school districts seeking to implement the new law.
