Body recovered from rubble of Rochester house that exploded

AP - ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) ? Firefighters have recovered a body from the basement of a Rochester house that exploded. The Rochester Democrat and Chronicle reports that searchers found the unidentified body shortly before 11 p.m. Wednesday. Rochester Fire Chief Willie Jackson says the medical examiner will conduct an autopsy. The explosion happened about 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and completely leveled the house. The cause of the blast is under investigation. Jackson said a Rochester Gas & Electric crew was called to the scene before the explosion when a neighbor reported smelling gas. The Democrat and Chronicle says a neighbor reported the sound of barking dog coming from the house and said he saw someone enter the home. Skateboarder hospitalized after Niskayuna crash

Laredo Morning Times - NISKAYUNA - A crash on Balltown Road sent a teen to the hospital late Wednesday and forced police to close the busy street for hours, police said. Luke Zink. 16, was listed in serious condition Thursday at Albany Medical Center, town police said. The crash occurred at 11:18 p.m. at the intersection of Balltown Road and Almeria Road, police said. Zink was riding a skateboard when he was hit by a car driven by a woman police identified as Brittany Gandara, who officers said stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Police detoured traffic around the crash scene for hours. Balltown Road reopened at 5 a.m. Thursday.

AP - SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (AP) ? Authorities say a man who died in an upstate New York jail had seven baggies that may have contained drugs in his stomach. The Times Union of Albany reports that Samuel Velasquez-Zabala Jr. was found dead Wednesday morning in his bunk bed at the Schenectady County jail. The county sheriff's department says baggies found in Velasquez-Zabala's stomach were marked with a stamp that's been found on baggies of heroin, fentanyl and other drugs. Authorities say urine samples from Velasquez-Zabala indicated drugs including cocaine, Oxycontin and methamphetamine were in his system. Velasquez-Zabala was taken in to custody on Tuesday evening on a warrant from the county's drug court. An autopsy was performed at Albany Medical Center Hospital.
