- The Medical Minute: Faith Factors into Health Care Needs Joanne Bauer | September 1, 2019 HERSHEY, Pa. ? From medical decisions and surgical recovery to coping with stress and end-of-life issues, a patient's faith ? or lack thereof ? affects nearly every part of a medical journey. Providers are trained to be experts in their science, but when it comes to healing the whole person, they must also consider the beliefs and faith background of their patients. Rev. Darlene Miller Cooley, a staff chaplain at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, said patients who have faith in a higher being or power tend to have a more positive outlook and better quality of life, even when they find themselves in dire situations. "Faith has a tendency to bring you peace in the midst of whatever storm you may be in," she said. "When patients believe in something and have hope, it changes the way they engage with thei

Roy Exum: A Change At Erlanger

- Within days, probably during this holiday-shortened week, embattled Kevin Spiegel, the head of Chattanooga's 8,000-employee Erlanger Hospital and its ever-widening medical footprint now in three states, will step down. Numerous sources reveal that the hospital's Board of Trustees will meet in an emergency-like session and sever ties with Spiegel, this despite his phenomenal achievements in the last six years since he was hired. The reason for his departure, quite simply, is because he no longer has the support of the board. The reason he has lost that support is far more complex, and maybe was best diagnosed by trauma surgeon Phillip Smith who admitted what everyone knew, "Something is just not right."   Following a somewhat puzzling "called" board meeting on Thursday of last week, it was instantly obvious far more was whispered rather than said. For instance, Dr. Smith also believes, "There is an ingrained lack of tr

- The threat of Hurricane Dorian solidified for many as the system grew into a catastrophic Category 5 storm Sunday morning, before lashing the northern Bahamas and looming just a few hundred miles off the coast of Florida. "It is imperative that all Floridians and their families take this threat seriously and have a plan in place," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said in a tweet. "Everyone should have seven days of food, water and medicine ready." Moments after the storm was upgraded to a Category 4 hurricane on Friday night, Brevard County, Florida, issued a mandatory evacuation order for those who live on the barrier islands, people who live in flood-prone areas, people who have special medical needs that involve electrical dependence and others ahead of Hurricane Dorian. During Saturday afternoon, county officials delayed the evacuation by 24 hours as the storm slowed. Other Floridians continue
