Death toll in Rio de Janeiro hospital fire rises to 11

AP - RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) ? A fire raced through a hospital in Rio de Janeiro, forcing staff to wheel patients into the streets on beds or in wheelchairs and leaving at least 11 people dead, Brazilian officials said Friday. Four firefighters were hospitalized after battling the overnight blaze at Badim Hospital and about 90 patients were transferred to other hospitals, according to the fire department. Authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze. Medical workers in surgical masks rolled equipment in the road as smoke billowed from the building after fire broke out Thursday night. Television images showed staff tending to patients sitting in wheelchairs with IV poles beside them in the street, some on sheets and mattresses. Elderly and intensive care patients were among those rescued. Houston Chronicle - CANAL WINCHESTER, Ohio (AP) ? A 44-year-old man who authorities say deliberately drove into an Ohio hospital entrance killing one person and injuring another has been charged with aggravated murder. The Columbus Dispatch reports the Fairfield County Sheriff's Office says Raymond Leiendecker, of Baltimore, Ohio, had undergone a psychological evaluation at the hospital Friday morning before driving a pickup truck into the emergency department entrance at Diley Ridge Medical Center in Canal Winchester. Sixty-one-year-old Scott Davis, a longtime hospital employee, was killed. A 58-year-old woman received non-life threatening injuries. Sheriff Dave Phalen says Leiendecker was upset about the evaluation. Phalen says there's no indication Leiendecker applied the brakes before crashing into the hospital. Houston Chronicle - PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (AP) ? Authorities in New Hampshire say they are working to identify a man whose body they found floating in the Piscataqua River. Portsmouth Police say they received calls about the discovery of the body on Friday evening. They say the Portsmouth Fire Department located the man's body just before 7:30 p.m. on the New Hampshire side of the river. Police say the man was found dead, and the New Hampshire Office of the Medical Examiner has been contacted. They said they had not yet identified the man as of Saturday morning. They also have yet to identify the cause of the man's death.
