India Times - 38 years since the first 3-D reconstruction of human head in a CT scan was published. The three-dimensional reconstruction of a human head in a CT scan was published for the first time in 1983. CT scan is also called X-ray computed tomography and computerised axial tomography scan. The computer-processed scan is a combination of many X-ray images taken from different angles to produce cross-sectional tomographic images. Digital geometry processing is used to generate a three-dimensional image of the inside of the object. Its cross-sectional images are used for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in various medical disciplines. CT scanning of the head is typically used to detect infarction, tumours, calcifications, haemorrhage and bone trauma. CT scan can help spot tumours through detection of the swelling and anatomical distortion they cause, or by surrounding oedema.
