Midland Daily News - The turnout was minimal but the audience that showed up to the "Cannabis Town Hall" informational meeting was engaged. Reefer Madness propaganda videos played in the background while a five-person panel spoke about the ins and outs of up-and-coming adult-use cannabis industry - one that the City of Midland has so far chosen to opt out of. "The business opportunities in this space are magnificent," said Panelist Tom Lavigne. "This is a multi-billion dollar industry that's just opening up. This doesn't happen but once a lifetime." Midland City Councilwoman Pamela Hall moderated and hosted the event. Last week's panel was one person short of what was originally planned, but consisted of: ? Jerry Spencer from the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws ? Attorney Tom Lavigne from Cannabis Counsel, Detroit ? Trevor Wisniewski, a representative from Great Lakes Natural Remedies Inc., a medical marijuana growing, processing and dispensing facility in Spauldi

Midland Daily News - For some people struggling with being overweight, surgical weight management can be a very effective tool. Research has shown that, with surgical assistance, patients can lose 60% of excess weight in the first year following bariatric surgery. Weight loss surgery has the potential to save lives. Q. Who might benefit from weight loss surgery? A. Anyone with a body mass index over 35 that also has a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or diabetes. If your BMI is over 40, you don't have to have a weight-related condition associated in order to qualify for surgery. Patients do undergo a psychological evaluation before surgery, and may have to see a specialist based on their medical history. Q. What's the first step someone takes to become a bariatric surgery patient? A. Often, we get a referral from a patient's primary care physician or specialist. Patients can also self-refer, if they've heard of bariatric surgery through word of mouth or family members or friends

AP - BAGHDAD (AP) - Abbas Ali spends most of his free time camped out in Tahrir Square - the epicenter of Iraq's anti-government protests - going home only at 3 a.m. to catch few hours of sleep, change his clothes and check on his family. He is determined to stay in the square until the end, whatever that may be. Ali was only 13 when the U.S.-led invasion toppled Saddam Hussein. He only vaguely remembers life under the dictator. What he knows clearly is that life in post-Saddam Iraq is a daily, often humiliating struggle for survival. The 29-year-old considers himself lucky to have a job, although the pay barely covers medical bills for his ailing father and elderly mother. His two brothers and sister are unemployed. So are most of his friends. He says marriage is the furthest thing from his mind since he couldn't possibly afford to start a family. Angry at factional, sectarian politicians and clerics he blames for stealing Iraq's wealth, Ali embodies the young Iraqis in Baghdad who f
